Plasma Cutting Torches

Back to the Blog

An essential component of an air plasma cutting system is the plasma cutting torch. The torches come in many shapes and sizes and are available with either gas or water cooling. The plasma cutting torch can operate with air and in some cases mixed gas. Older type torches tended to be large and heavy but manufacturers have over several years engineered models which a smaller and lighter with a higher rated cutting capacity. A plasma cutting torch is generally supplied in 6 or 12 mtr lengths and may have an electrical or mechanical pilot arc system.

The torch will have a power/gas connection, pilot cable and switch connections. All plasma cutting torches should incorporate a safety circuit to prevent operator injury when changing the plasma consumables. This is usually a simple ring circuit that breaks any electrical switching as soon as the cutting nozzle is removed, preventing operation. Without such a protection circuit the open circuit voltage could be as high as 500 volts at the torch head end which is extremely dangerous.

Manual handheld air plasma cutting torches are generally rated within a range of 20 – 150 amps.

The plasma torch head also referred to as torch body encompasses the torch electrode, swirl baffle for gas/air distribution in the correct manner, constricting nozzle and nozzle holder.
